Engineering projects may vary in scale and complexity. This could be based on the project, its location and the allocated budget. The Consulting Engineer plays a critical role in the successful realisation of any engineering or construction project. In FIDIC contracts, the Engineer’s primary role is to administer the contract impartially as regards the Employer and the Contractor, while supervising the technical execution of the Works.
The Engineer’s role is therefore vital for the project’s execution as much as to its successful completion. They can act as the technical bridge between the design teams and the project team, as well as managing the contract to be able to administer it effectively.
While most projects come with their own unique set of challenges and unforeseen issues, the Engineer who is sufficiently adept should be able to navigate matters relating to compliance with specifications, budgetary parameters, evaluating claims and determining completion and defects.

It is however not the Engineer’s role to completely take responsibility for construction means and methods. These remain under the Contractor’s responsibility. However, this does not take away from the requirement that the Engineer who is appointed by the Employer, must act independently and fairly when making determinations.
For consulting engineers working on engineering projects governed by FIDIC contracts, success depends on far more than technical expertise. FIDIC places a strong emphasis on contractual discipline, impartial administration, and proactive risk management. The FIDIC Certified Consulting Engineer certification requires at least five years of work experience as well as a professional qualification.
