Certified Trainer
Programme information
The FIDIC Certified Trainer certification is a senior level qualification suitable for trainers who are experienced in conducting face-to-face or virtual training of professionals working in the infrastructure, engineering, or construction industries around the world.
FIDIC Certified Trainer certification is split into three main categories and their subcategories are mentioned below:
- FIDIC Certified Trainer of contracts
1.1 FIDIC Certified Trainer of contracts – Fundamental construction contracts: This Certified Trainer of contracts specialises in training topics related to the Fundamental construction contracts:
- FIDIC Golden Principles (2019)
- FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Construction for Building and Engineering works designed by the Employer (1999 and 2017)
- FIDIC Conditions of Contract for Plant and Design-Build (1999 and 2017)
- FIDIC Conditions of Contract for EPC/Turnkey Projects (1999 and 2017)
- FIDIC MDB Harmonised Edition for Building and Engineering Works Designed by the Employer (2010)
- FIDIC Short Form of Contract (1999 and 2021)
- FIDIC Conditions of Subcontract for Building and Engineering works designed by the Employer (2009 and 2017)
- FIDIC Conditions of Subcontract for Plant and Design-Build
- FIDIC Contracts Guide, Edition 2000
NB: From March 2024, all FIDIC Certified Trainer of contracts – Fundamental construction contracts assessments will be delivered under exam syllabus version 2.
1.2 FIDIC Certified Trainer of contracts – Consulting services agreements: This Certified Trainer of contracts specialises in training topics related to the Consulting services agreements:
- FIDIC Client/Consultant Model Services Agreement (White Book, 2006 and 2017)
- FIDIC Sub-Consultancy Agreement (1992 and 2017)
- FIDIC Model Representative Agreement (2013)
- FIDIC Joint Venture (Consortium) Agreement (1992 and 2017)
- FIDIC Certified Trainer of Adjudicators: A FIDIC Certified trainer of adjudicators conducts face-to-face and virtual training of persons working in the infrastructure, engineering or construction industries globally whose seek training in the adjudication of disputes arising from FIDIC contracts.
- FIDIC Certified Trainer in Business practice: A FIDIC certified business practice trainer conducts face-to-face and virtual training of professionals working in the infrastructure, engineering or construction industry in the management and operating practices of a consulting firm.

The online exam will take place two times per year, as indicated in the “Dates” section.
Application requirements
FIDIC Certified Trainer: (FIDIC Contracts)
The FIDIC Certified Trainer (in Fundamental Construction Contracts) certification is for someone with at least five (5) years of workplace experience in the infrastructure, engineering or construction industries which involves the use of FIDIC conditions of Fundamental construction contracts working for a client, a contractor or a consulting engineering practitioner.
The Certified Trainer – Silver book certification is for Trainers who have been received their FIDIC Certified Trainer in Fundamental Construction contracts certification. It is suitable for trainers who conduct face-to-face and virtual trainings for professionals working globally in the infrastructure, engineering or construction industries on topics framed around the following FIDIC documents:
- FIDIC Golden Principles (2019)
- FIDIC Conditions of Contract for EPC/Turnkey Projects (1999 and 2017)
- FIDIC Contracts Guide, Edition 2000
Prerequisites:
- Training experience: at least 10 days (at least 80 hours in total) of training sessions you have delivered in the last five (5) years for professionals working within the infrastructure, engineering, or construction industry.
- Relevant knowledge: at least three years’ workplace experience in the infrastructure, engineering or construction industry involving working for a client, consulting engineering practice or contractor engaged in infrastructure, engineering or construction projects.
Competencies
- Good English language proficiency and understanding.
- At ease with presenting training in English.
Application documents
- Recent portrait photo, taken on a plain background.
- Proof of residence, which meets the requirements. This information, as well as the form, can be found here.
- Training experience: A completed and signed copy of the Training Experience Reference form, which can be downloaded here. It should be signed by a referee who knows the applicant. If needed, the Training Experience Reference form can be submitted multiple times, signed by different referees in order to meet the cumulative minimum of 80 hours of training sessions delivered by the candidate in the last five (5) years to professionals working within the infrastructure, engineering, or construction industries.
- Relevant knowledge: A completed and signed copy of the Workplace Experience Reference form, which can be downloaded here. It should be signed by a referee who knows or knew the applicant. If needed, the Workplace Experience Reference form can be submitted multiple times, signed by different referees to meet the cumulative minimum of three years’ workplace experience in the infrastructure, engineering or construction industry involving working for a client, consulting engineering practice or contractor engaged in infrastructure, engineering or construction projects.
Fees
FIDIC Certified Trainer of contracts – Fundamental construction contracts
- Application fee: CHF 100. This fee is payable at the submission of the application. There is no discount applicable to this fee.
- Phase 1 Examination fee: CHF 450. This fee is payable before the participation in the Phase 1 exam (Multiple Choice Question exam).
- Retake: Phase 1 fee: CHF 450. This fee is only payable before the participation in a retake exam, if the candidate fails/is unsuccessful during the initial Phase 1 exam attempt.
- Phase 2 Examination fee: CHF 1,550. This fee is payable before participation in the Phase 2 exam and also covers the certification fees.
- Retake Phase 2 fee: CHF 1,550. This fee is only payable before the participation in a retake exam, if the candidate fails/is unsuccessful during the initial Phase 2 exam attempt.
- Yearly renewal fee: CHF 250. This fee is payable at the end of Year 1 and Year 2 of the certification validity period.
- Recertification fee: CHF 1,500. This fee is payable in the 3rd year after the initial certification expires.

FCL applies a tiered discount policy, based on the financial data of each candidate’s country of residence.
- Tier 1: 0% discount
- Tier 2: 15% discount
- Tier 3: 35% discount
- Tier 4: 50% discount

Assessment details
Assessment
The assessment for all the certification categories will be delivered in two parts.
Phase 1: an online multiple-choice question exam assessing the candidate’s competencies in the subject matter.
- Fundamental construction contracts: 125 Multiple-choice questions in 6 hours (open book exam)
- Consulting services agreements: 60 Multiple-choice questions in 3 hours (open book exam)
- Business Practices: 100 Multiple-choice questions in 4 hours (closed book exam)
- Adjudication: TBC
Successful Phase 1 candidates will be invited in Phase 2 of the assessment.
Phase 2: Deliver a live online 25-minute mock teaching session (microteaching) in front of an assessment panel of 3 assessors who will play the role of trainees. At the end of the microteaching, the candidate will answer up to 15 minutes of questions raised by three assessors. The assessors will assess the competency of the candidate as against the required competencies in the delivery of the training.
NB: if a candidate has already passed Phase 2 of the assessment for any of the FLC Certified Trainer certifications within the previous 5 years, they are exempt from participating again in Phase 2 if they are applying for an additional Certified Trainer certification. In that case, such a candidate is awarded their certification upon successful participation in Phase 1 of the subcategory they are applying for.
Award of Certification
If the candidate is successful in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments, they will be awarded a Certified Trainer certification.
This certification is valid for three (3) years from the date of issue.
Monitoring and recertification procedure
The certification is valid for three (3) years from the date of issue. To maintain the validity of the credentials for this 3-year term, certificate holders will need to follow a specific yearly monitoring procedure. Failure to meet the yearly monitoring requirements will result in the credentials being suspended and/or withdrawn before their expiration date.
When the credentials expire (at the end of the 3-year term), the certificate holders will be required to follow a specific recertification procedure.

FIDIC Fundamental Construction Contracts
Applications open: 18 Sept. – 18 October 2024
Phase 1 exam: 31 October 2024
Phase 2 assessment: 19 – 22 November 2024.
Successful Phase 1 who cannot be accommodated for the above Phase 2 dates, will have secured their place for the next Phase 2 slots in 2025.
