Contract management in today’s world
Since the pandemic, the cost of doing business has gone up globally. Energy costs, access to resources, climate change concerns, sustainability criteria, transportation spikes and other factors have led to increased pressure on the engineering and construction sectors to provide services in a efficient and cost-effective manner.
Contract management oversight is fundamental if a construction project is to be successful. From the planning stage to the drafting, the procurement and then the implementation, a contract manager can play a vital part in the project’s development and completion. Contract management requires expertise in several aspects of the project, including the contractual considerations, the parties obligations and the project’s needs.
The contract used for the project is as critical as what the parties agree should be included or modified. Those who are then tasked to implement the contract must therefore understand what the parties want and what is required to bring the project to life.
This is why a FIDIC Certified Contract Manager should ideally be someone who is comfortable managing contracts during the project’s entire lifecycle.
As many engineering and construction projects use FIDIC Standard Conditions of Contract, a good understanding of how they are applied and when they should be used is essential.
Often when we talk about upholding industry standards, it is with the understanding that an expert, specialist or practitioner working in their chosen field of expertise understands the ethical, social, environmental and other implications, as well as what is needed to mitigate risks and safeguard the interests of the parties.
Why become certified by FIDIC?
The FIDIC Certified Contract Manager certification is a recognised industry benchmark. It is an excellent way for those with experience in the infrastructure, engineering and construction sectors to show the industry they have the skills and experience required to manage contracts and its related aspects.
From the conception to the design and pre-construction phases, a contract manager should be able to demonstrate a firm grasp of the relevant FIDIC contracts and how they would apply to the project – with consideration of course being given to ensuring that FIDIC’s core values, namely quality, integrity and sustainability are respected.
This expertise should also include the ability to find or source solutions when there are challenges to the project’s completion.
A qualification of this calibre from a reputed international institution like FIDIC is an important stamp of excellence within the engineering and construction sectors as it can provide an excellent means of validating one’s expert knowledge of contract management – as applicable within the natural and built environments.
